Biography: Karsteen is noted for being the honour graduate of his class in the Academy, and subsequent schools in the New Republic Military .

Prematurely advanced in grade several times, he is considered to be on the fast track for the General Staff.

Colonel Braman hand picked Karsteen as his second in command when the regiment was attached to the 3rd Division and deployed to Farpoint.
