Biography: Grey joined the Imperial military to escape poverty. He gradually rose through the ranks by simply doing his job and letting more ambitious or incompetent officers destroy themselves with political manoeuvring.
His streak of independence and compassion, shown most often by sidestepping or out-manoeuvring the more heinous of his orders, prevented him from rising to a full captaincy.
Just prior to Sobek's attempted invasion of the Imperial Remnant, Grey's captain shared information with him about the true nature of the situation with Steele's fleet. The captain was killed during the Battle of U1977, and Grey led members of the crew of the Dark Steel in a mutiny against the First Officer, who planned to continue an already lost battle.
He was held in a prison colony for cooperative defectors, where he is believed to have escaped in 51:4.
