When it was discovered that High Admiral Steele was building a Super Star Destroyer and had an entire fleet hidden in the region, it was decided that having Rogue Squadron based on Earth and its moon in fact made Earth a larger target. Instead, a new base was built on a nearby planet dubbed Farpoint, which housed the rapidly growing unit.
P9R-221 is the official designation of Farpoint. It has rolling grassy plains, no indigenous animal life, good water, a lot of edible plant life, and good soil should food need to be grown. The atmosphere is calm, perfect for flying starfighters in.
Farpoint has a single moon, a bland dustball incapable of holding onto an atmosphere. The Farpoint System has five planets, Farpoint being the third. The inner two are smaller than Farpoint, the first is a molten, sulphurous hell, and the second a desert world with a tolerable night, but unsurvivable daytime temperatures. The outer two are large gas giants. An asteroid belt runs between Farpoint and the fourth planet.
The base is built around a circular basin, with much of the facilities built into the walls of the basin and underground. A heavily armoured tower rises up from the centre of the base and a circular ring of fortified buildings that serve as defence against a ground assault. However, since its construction, the base has spread outwards from the confines of its original fortifications, allowing for more open space and buildings.
The outer defensive ring includes antivehicle artillery and anti-personnel batteries to defend against ground attacks, while both central and outer sections of the base are armed with turbolaser and ion cannon batteries, to defend against aerial attacks.
Some distance from the base itself, planetary turbolaser and ion cannons cover the square of sky above the base, a planetary shield generator is used to protect an area approximately fifty kilometres in diameter around the base.
After the destruction of the Warrens on Shedyet, Farpoint opened its doors to refugees largely created by the Dukhang crisis. In response to overwhelming demand, the camp outside the base's gates grew from tents to plasteel huts to permanent structures with a rapidly growing population.
Many of the city's population have turned to agriculture, so a wide central boulevard extending from the base's gates operates as a vibrant market, popular with both citizens and Farpoint personnel. Although weapons are forbidden, the city also hosts a burgeoning black market.
At the far end of the boulevard, Durban, the former leader of the Warrens, holds court as the de facto leader of the city, advised by a diverse council.
Located at the heart of the base, Ops is the nerve centre of Farpoint. It is always active, and the base itself and its defences are run from it. Ops Centre also acts as the tactical command centre during engagements.
Ops Centre is a circular area, centred around a holoprojector. Adjacent to it are the offices of the Commanding Officer, Executive Officer and Tactical Director, as well as the command briefing room. Other offices and command facilities are nearby.
The embarkation room deep under Farpoint is much like its counterpart on Earth. It is a large duracrete room, the Stargate located at one end of it, trailing all the equipment needed to dial it manually should the DHD fail.
At the opposite end of the room, the control room looks down over the gate through an inch of transparisteel, a heavy laser cannon beneath it pointed directly at the centre of the gate. A squad of SD-10 war droids can be called from behind panels in the walls, and troops and medics are on standby on either side of the room.
On one side, a freight elevator big enough for anything that would fit through the gate leads up to the surface and other storage bays, while on the other side a reinforced door leads out to the prep room.
A geosychronous orbital facility acts as a dock and repair yard for capital ships, and a home for starfighter squadrons patrolling the system, as well as ammunition and supply caches, and some infantry units. It is heavily defended, so also acts to keep enemy vessels away from the area above the base. The orbital facility is linked to the base by transport rings.
Barracks
These are located in and round the outer defensive ring, for easy deployment.
The barracks are adjoined by hangars for transports and vehicles. Other vehicle bays are also located
here, so that vehicles can be driven off the base easily.
Hangars
Built into the sides of the basin, where starfighters and transports are housed
while on the surface.
Intelligence Centre
The nerve centre of RS Intel's operations. It follows a similar layout
to Ops, located deeper down in the base. The main floor is a a mass of desks, consoles, datastreams
and analysts. A raised walkway circles it, which houses the Director's office, and doors leading to
briefing rooms and debriefing rooms, and corridors spider off towards more of Intel's facilities.
Observation Lounge
This is located in the top inhabited level of the tower, before it gives way
to weapons and sensor emplacements. It offers a panoramic view of the surroundings. It is often used as a
grand hall for celebrations.
Ring Terminal
This is where the base's transport rings are located, for transport up to the
orbital facility, or other craft which are positioned correctly.
Nearpoint was formerly known as Research Station M345, home of the first Stargate found by the New Republic, and the only one known to exist in their space. Since then it has been taken over by the military and fortified, to prevent incursions into New Republic space through the Stargate, to defend the Stargate from attack, and to act as a transit point for traffic to and from Farpoint.
Most of Nearpoint is covered in one massive, warm ocean, except for one small continent. This is covered in beautiful green plains, with occasional large lakes and forested areas. It has been a scene of archaeological interest since it was first visited by explorers. Other tiny islands and archipelago are dotted around the globe.
The base itself has considerable defences, to guard against Goa'uld incursions such as those which originally made the New Republic aware of the threat they posed. It is also necessary to guard against rogue agents trying to get hold of the Stargate for their own ends.
The Stargate dialling system is programmed only to dial Earth, Farpoint and a designated emergency evacuation site.
The base is defended by two ships, the MC90 Star Cruiser Mon Jolsuxas, which was assigned to the base in 48:2 and the Victory-II Star Destroyer Halen was the first vessel assigned to Nearpoint. Mon Jolsuxas carries a squadron each of A-Wings, B-Wings, E-Wings and X-Wings. The E-Wing unit was formerly carried by Reef before its assignment to Farpoint. Halen carries a single Y-Wing unit named Starscream Squadron, which used to be part of Hunter's wing.
